Historians of our sport will know that this is where great Abebe Bikila won the Olympic Marathon in bare feet on the cobbled streets of Rome. You can follow in the great man’s footsteps on a traffic free route that takes you around all of the sights of the eternal city.
The Rome Marathon is steeped in tradition, starting on the Via dei Fori Imperiali, in the shadow of the Colosseum. Run past famous Trevi Fountain, the Piazza di Spagna, the Pantheon, St Peter’s, Piazza Venezia and cross the Tiber River (a number of times). The course is flat and there are some cobblestones along the way but the course really is something special!
