The Trans Atlas Marathon is the hottest event in the extreme sports arena. Competitors have six days to cross Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, covering a distance of 285 km.
2017 sees the added option of running the Trans Atlas Marathon CHALLENGE (lite version of the TAM) for runners who want to partake but do not feel able to complete the gruelling 285 km in six days. This option means you run the first half of each stage and are collected by 4×4 at one of the check points and driven to the end of the stage. Those who completed the CHALLENGE in 2016 have raved about this wonderful set up enabling them to experience the same excitement and beauty of the TAM without requiring them to have the extreme fitness required for the full stages.
We have included brief video of the event to inspire you! Click here or on the image below.
What is so very different about Trans Atlas Marathon is the scale of it. The absolutely immeasurable level of intimacy and contact with the people who live in the spectacular scenery through which you will run.
The High Atlas mountains are an area of extreme natural beauty, untouched and undeveloped, retaining the full authenticity of a world of another time.
By becoming part of the tribe of Trans Atlas Marathon runners, you will not only be put through some of the toughest running on the planet but you will be part of a group that is small enough to enjoy what is rare these days in extreme events; true camaraderie and contact on a human scale.
The organisers of this epic 6 stage race are the world famous Ahancal brothers (Mohamad and Lahcen), who made their names by coming first and second place in 15 editions of the Marathon des Sables race in the Moroccan Sahara. These two men have run and in some cases won some of the toughest races on the planet and finally decided in 2012 to start their own extreme foot race across the High Atlas mountains in terrain that will keep you gasping for breath not only physically but also metaphorically through the diverse beauty of the landscape they want you to experience.
Trans Atlas Marathon, an exceptional route for those who really want to explore preserved landscapes, learn about Moroccan and Berber cultural richness, and meet people whose preferred way of living rare and special.
The trail begins from Zaouiat Ahansal to Imlil. This route is a long crossing of the High Atlas in 6 days, during which you will meet true Amazigh (Berbers), whose daily life based on customs inherited from their ancestors, explore the world renowned massifs MGoun and Toubkal, landscapes with quiet beauty.
This route alternating between ridges and snowy peaks, plains and plateaus, gorges and valleys presents nature in its entire splendour.
Average temperature in Marrakech May is 18 degrees with a minimum of 7 degrees.
